OK….here it is! The actual fall!

Let me preface this with some background…. 95% of the time I do shows on ships with a full 7pce band. I have curated the shows and they are always really fun!

For this particular cruise, I was informed when I boarded that there was no band, so I had to quickly put together a show using what backing tracks I had. The song I fell over to happens to be one of my all-time favs from Whitney Houston, ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’.

This was in the middle of my set! There were some people in the crowd I could see, who were really loving the tune, so I went over to that side of the stage for a chance to engage with them. It’s at this point that I misjudged where I was and what was behind me. By the time my brain engaged and I was aware of my surroundings, I was heading ass over backwards!!

Funnily enough, everything slowed down, I knew to tuck and roll if I wanted to not break my ribs, or my neck (thank goodness for taking gymnastics in my youth and dance training throughout my life!).

Not once did it occur to me to let go of the microphone or stay down!! 🤣🤣🤣 40 years of experience willed me back on my feet in time for the next line to be sung! The rest of the set went off without a hitch!

As you’ll hear, the audience were right there with me the whole time and I thank them all for being such great sports! They were all incredibly supportive during and after the show, coming up to make sure I was ok!

So, enjoy!! Have the biggest giggle on me, knowing no humans were injured in the making of this clip!! 🤣🤣🤣 I have laughed more about this than I have anything else in a while! In the past I would never have posted something like this. Something that would have felt, and looked, unpolished, not ‘perfect’. I’m a Virgo, a perfectionist….boy am I letting that shit go these days! 🙌🏼🙌🏼😘💃💃

I preface this post by saying that I am unharmed…just a little bit sore!

I’ve walked down staircases in stiletto heels on live Aus telly, I’ve been hoisted into the air standing on top of a round stage, no hand rails, in China, in front of 1 billion people worldwide no less, I’ve tripped into a drum kit once and at school, during a musical production, went into a grand piano! Not bad innings for an almost 40 year career!

Last night at my show on a lovely ship, I misjudged where I was, walked backwards thinking I had more room and went T over A backwards over the monitor!!

If I’m feeling brave and you all promise to laugh with me (not at me, although I wouldn’t blame you! It was a pretty interesting moment) I’ll post the actual clip of the whole fall….. I rolled out of it, stood up and kept singing! And I never let go of the microphone!
The show must go on as they say!!

Just over two weeks to go until Showtime! 🙌🏼⭐️⭐️

It took me a long time to be brave enough to put my thoughts and feelings to music for others to hear. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30s that I began to write and release a handful of songs of my own. I never really considered myself a legitimate songwriter. I never studied the craft in any professional sense. I guess being a musician and a singer of songs and a learner of composition and form by way of performance, I learned by listening and of the doing. I knew what I liked to hear and over time, I let myself be a little bit more brave with each song.

I always worried about feeling judged or shamed for my thoughts and feelings being put to music and whether anyone would like what I was creating. I guess I still do to some degree, but now I feel the fear and do it anyway! And I lean in just a little bit more each time.

As the wonderful Elizabeth Gilbert put it in her fantastic book Big Magic “You are entitled to the work, but you are not entitled to the outcome of the work”.

So, we create the thing. We bring the thing into the public so that YOU can own it. These songs are all for you.

Last night I had the absolute privilege of attending the world premiere of STELLA – A New Australian Musical, written entirely by the extraordinarily talented @moniquedimattina

Monique and I first met at university, and for more than 30 years we’ve shared friendship, music, and many creative adventures. To say I was blown away by what I witnessed last night would be an understatement. I am still reverberating from the experience.

STELLA tells the remarkable and largely untold story of literary icon Stella Miles Franklin — a young woman from the Snowy Mountains who sacrificed family, security and belonging in pursuit of a creative life, ultimately helping shape Australia’s cultural landscape. It’s powerful, moving, inspiring, and beautifully told.

What Monique and this incredible team have achieved is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s hard enough getting a gig off the ground, let alone creating an entire original musical. The years of dedication, creativity, sacrifice, money, sweat, blood, tears, determination and heart that go into a production like this are almost impossible to comprehend.

This is exactly the kind of bold, original Australian work that deserves our support.

I’ve been a professional voice user for over 3 decades and a vocal coach for almost as long. I get asked questions about voice health, usually when someone is in crisis. It happens to the best of us, and sometimes it leads to cancelled performances. Most of the time though, we soldier through, do the best we can and allow what we have left vocally to do the work!

There are a few tips I give to all my students and anyone who asks really!
Number 1 top tip is steam! Steam is so healing and restorative. Keep anything mentholated away from your steaming or your mouth as anything mentholated can dry out the membrane that needs moisture to heal properly.
Tip number 2 is go non-verbal for a decent stretch. If you can’t do 24hrs, do 12. When your folds are swollen, they need less, not more when they are at this stage.
Tip number 3 is hydration. Kinda goes hand in hand with tip 1! There’s a difference between how long water takes to hydrate the vocal folds than for steam, but your whole body needs hydration. True hydration needs something in your water for the body to actively ‘munch on’. A pinch of high quality mineral packed salt, a squeeze of lemon juice, a quarter tab of hydrolyte. Something for the body to absorb otherwise you’ll just pee it all out and still feel thirsty.
Tip number 4 is a more a personal choice, and I know I would not get through my vocal demands and staying as well as possible without my salt room sessions Salts of the Earth in Hampton. @marieatsalts is the best! I’ve been coming here for over 6 years and I know how big an impact this therapy has had on me! I had to share this photo because it’s probably one of the funniest things that’s happened to me in a little while! 😂

I was performing at a private house concert on Saturday night for a birthday party, and this is their gorgeous dog Fletcher. Every single time I played my shaker — which, yes, happens to be shaped like an orange 🍊 — he would sit there patiently waiting for me to throw what he thought was a ball!

Honestly, he was the cutest little guy and quite possibly one of the best audience members I’ve ever had. 🐶🎶

Hey everyone,

I wanted to jump on and talk a little bit about perfection… or more accurately, the illusion of it.

Last week, I completely screwed up on stage. Not just a tiny slip — I fluffed a song so spectacularly that we had to stop and start again. In the moment, it felt mortifying. But once I got past the initial shock, something unexpected happened… it felt liberating.

There’s something powerful about being exposed like that and realising you’re still standing. Still singing. Still connected.

Lately, I’ve been learning to make friends with the imperfect parts of myself — not iron them out, not hide them, but actually welcome them in. In a time where everything can be filtered, edited, and “perfected,” choosing to lean into what’s raw and human feels like going against the grain… but also like the most honest thing I can do as an artist.

And that’s exactly what this next show is about.

I’ll be performing a collection of my original music — songs I’ve been writing and rewriting over the last couple of decades. It’s deeply personal, a little vulnerable, and very real. The whole show will be filmed and live streamed… and it’s one show only.

I’d absolutely love you to be part of it.

Happy International Jazz Day 🎶

Came across this absolute blast from the past on YouTube not long ago — footage of me (I think I’m about 18 if I’m a day!) singing Careless Love with the Radio Rhythm Orchestra, led by Ian Hellings, filmed at the ABC Studios. And here’s the wild part… I have absolutely no memory of this performance! I’m also giggling at the fact that I’m singing about love and careless love at that! I had no idea about anything back then let alone singing a song about such subject matter!

It really hit me just how much music I’ve sung, how many places I’ve travelled, and how many incredible gigs I’ve been lucky enough to be part of — it all starts to blur into one beautiful, chaotic timeline. Thank goodness I’ve kept programs, articles and bits of memorabilia from along the way… I suspect future-me will be very grateful when it’s time to write that memoir.

I’ll do my best to list the phenomenal band from this recording — but I know I’m missing a couple of names, so if you recognise anyone please jump in and add them in the comments!
